Discovering new compounds hidden within unexplored regions of phase space enables the realization of new, exotic properties and the creation of revolutionary new materials for a wide range of applications. Accessing untapped regions of phase space necessitates the synthesis of kinetically trapped or metastable phases since the thermodynamically stable phases of binary compounds were fully charted decades ago. Binary phase diagrams indicate phase stability of compounds comprised of two and only two elements. Although there are thousands of known binary phases, there exist certain combinations of elements where no thermodynamic process will lead to the isolation of a new material. The synthesis and study of new binary compounds that combine first row transition metals with heavy main group elements will be presented.
