In the present work, we demonstrate that 1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxamidate is an excellent chelator for nickel and provides active olefin polymerization catalysts. The N-aryl carboxamidate substituents have a significant impact on both the catalyst’s stability and polymerization behaviors. Theses catalysts produce hyperbranched polyethylene (ca. 80-120 branches per 1000 carbon atoms) with narrow polydispersity (Mw/Mn =1.5-2.5). Most interestingly, because the β-triazole nitrogen atoms are potential donors for the coordination of secondary metal ions, the triazolecarboxamidate scaffold can potentially bridge two metal centers. We propose that further modification of the 1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxamidate framework, such as attachment of a second donor at the γ position of the triazole unit, would enable the construction of stable bimetallic complexes that are active as olefin polymerization catalysts.
