Most existing organic electronic materials have been based on a single molecular components. There is recent interest in exploring binary charge-transfer (CT) complexes of aromatic donor molecules for improved electronic and optoelectronic properties. Our group is examining the possibility of superconductivity and other interesting properties in novel CT complexes with a variety of sulfur-rich aromatic donors. We present our recent results on the preparation and characterization of CT complexes of benzotrithiophenes with a variety of organic and inorganic acceptors (e.g. C3h–benzotrithiophene–F4TCNQ, illustrated below). We have determined their X-ray crystal structures, spectroscopic properties, and magnetic properties, and estimated their degrees of charge transfer.
