This presentation reviews examples of nanofiber-based wearable sensors using functional fibers and yarns. These active materials are assembled via a multilayer deposition of functional nanofibers on the surface of commercial fibers, yarns or fabrics using hydrogels of nano-fibrous materials such as nanocellulose and a novel method of nanofiber spinning—touch-spinning (TS). The TS method is based on drawing single filament nanofibers via a direct mechanical contact with a droplet of a polymer solution. The TS-nanofibers can be deposited on or wound around substrates or frames of different shapes with controlled fiber alignment, density, and spacing. The fabrication of sheath-core composite yarns decorated with multilayers of functional nanofibers is a scalable technology. Blending of different nanofibers with electroconductive, piezoelectric, and semiconducting properties provides multiple opportunities for the fabrication of fibrous materials for flexible and wearable sensor applications.
