Lipid biosynthesis and metabolism are important processes to understand as they relate to structure, function, and signaling in cellular biology.  The limited tolerance that many enzymes exhibit for a range of both endogenous and synthetic substrates creates opportunities for grafting custom chemical labels onto biomolecules in vivo. Chemical labels that are introduced into lipid biosynthetic pathways could broadly permeate the lipidome, or may be targeted to a particular subset of lipid species. In this presentation, we will describe the design, synthesis and application of small molecule probes for the labeling of lipids. Following cellular incorporation, these tagged molecules can be covalently modified using biorthogonal chemistry for further manipulation, detection, and tracking using chromatographic, spectrometric, and microscopic techniques.<br/>
