Our lab has shown that modifications to the phenolic function of parabens has made it possible to separate the anti-microbial properties from the xenoestrogenic compound. Modifications of the ester function within parabens will allow insight into its role within both its anti-microbial and xenoestogenetic properties. Understanding the SAR of the ester with the respect to the antimicrobial properties will later allow us to tune the function for desired or undesirable molecular degradation. Increasing the rate of hydrolysis is then expected to lead to a topical paraben that will be less likely to accumulate within mammalian cells.
