The equilibrium constant for the weak hydrogen bond forming between phenol (H-donor) and benzene (π-acceptor) has been investigated using vibrational overtone spectroscopy of phenol's OH stretch in several solvents. The use of the overtone allows for simplification of the vibrational spectrum and analysis to determine the relative proportion of "free" versus "bound" phenol in solution. Equilibrium constants were determined in several chlorinated solvents to determine the magnitude of the effect of solvent polarity on this relatively weak (&lt; 2 kcal/mol binding enthalpy) interaction. Comparison to computational results and implications for future studies of related systems are also presented.
