The electronic properties, structures and reactivity of cross-conjugated species have fascinated chemists for a long time.  We have exploited several (fluorinated) isoindenones as fleeting intermediates for the construction of rigid bisarene scaffolds and explored the effect of fluorine substituents on the isoindenone dimerization itself and on subsequent synthetic transformations.  Our recent efforts to obtain "mixed" isoindenone dimers from a set of suitable precursors will be discussed.<br/>We have also launched synthetic efforts toward fluoro-dendralenes and will present selected syntheses of lower, non-volatile fluoro-dendralenes and their chemistry.
