The Union College Chemistry and Biochemistry Club aims to promote the pursuit of scientific knowledge and inquisitive thought for the campus community. Creative events engage students and faculty, members of the local Schenectady region, and the public at large. College-wide events include understanding the chemistry of psychotropic drugs in conjunction with the school’s health center, serving innovative foods at the annual culinary chemistry potluck picnic while analyzing their chemical makeup with professors, and having viewing parties of ACS’s Program-in-a-Box. Union alumni and the campus are also involved in multiple liquid nitrogen ice cream social events during the Homecoming and Alumni Weekends. Mentors guide underclass students in their journey through chemistry by offering class suggestions, providing testimonials to senior theses experiences, and providing helpful study tips. Our club has promoted science education to children and the general public by hosting a family science night at a local library, performing science demonstrations at an elementary school science fair, and arranging a booth at the New York State Museum to celebrate National Chemistry Week with youth and their families. The club plans to collaborate with the Union College Bee Club to not only promote the school’s own organic honey, but also educate students about the dangers of pesticides; we will also team up with a professor who enjoys making homemade bread to teach others about the chemistry of baking. The possibilities of future events and expanding our positive influence are endless. Our club has successfully woven various disciplines together in our events, and will persist in promoting the integration of chemistry and biochemistry with other intersecting fields. Union College’s Chemistry and Biochemistry Club’s significant reach has touched the lives of individuals coming from diverse and even non-STEM backgrounds, and we will continue to innovate, educate, and share our excitement about science.
