Catalysts, not only help make products more accessible and cheaper, but also enable the discovery of new reactions. Traditionally in organic chemistry, single catalysts are introduced in a system to catalyze a reaction. Even though this strategy has led to the discovery of reactions that were otherwise unattainable, many reactions are yet to be done more efficiently and more selectively. Synergistic catalysis could provide access to new avenues of chemistry by unlocking reactions with unreactive substrates. Synergistic catalysis is the interaction of two catalysts that catalyze a reaction to give a combined effect that is greater than the sum of the effects of each individual catalyst if used separately. Understanding how these catalysts work, would help design new reactions and also improve existing reactions. The results of synergistic effect of thiourea and various Lewis acids and their activation mechanism will be discussed.
