<br/>Generating liquid fuels through flash pyrolysis of woody biomass and the subsequent upgrading has been identified as one of the feasible ways to produce renewable transportation fuels. The overall aim is to produce a drop-in liquid fuel that has similar properties as conventional gasoline, diesel or jet fuel cuts through thermochemical and catalytic means. In recent years there has been growing interest in using electrochemical methods for hydrogenation of organic materials. Conventional hydrogenation technologies require elevated temperatures and externally supplied high pressure (2000psi) hydrogen. The same reactions can be performed using an electrochemical reactor at close to room temperature and with no externally supplied hydrogen. To this end we have demonstrated reduction in the carbonyl content and the phenolic content of untreated bio-oil in a flow cell.<br/>For this paper, we will present our research examining a series of molecules using both theory and experiments. These materials allow us to examine the impacts of different functionalities on reaction kinetics. In addition to examining single compounds, simple mixtures will be examined to better understand the kinetic impacts. These tests are being done in modified H-Cells with a Nafion separator, as well as in a flow cell with an integrated reference electrode. A series of electrode materials will be studied as the electro catalyst. A description of work conducted and discussion of results will be presented.<br/>
