<br/>Electrochemical reactions and processes offer several distinct advantages during water treatment. In this presentation, we will give an overview of recent developments in the area of electrochemical processes used in combination with membrane separations. We will explore different material classes (organic and inorganic) used for the fabrication of electrically conducting membranes with varying pore sizes, and discuss the distinct advantages and disadvantages of each class, as well as future research needs in material development. In addition, we will discuss specific electrochemical reactions that can be exploited to enhance water treatment (e.g. targeted destruction and transformation of specific contaminants (organic and inorganic) and enhanced rejection of charged species), and solve certain fundamental problems associated with membrane treatment, such as organic fouling, mineral scaling, and biofouling. Finally, we will provide an overview of electrochemical methods that can be used to transform membranes to sensors capable of detecting specific conditions on the membrane surface. <br/>
