In this paper we present a facile approach to generate functional cellulose based thin films from aqueous solutions of cellulose xanthate. Homogeneous films can be prepared by deposition of CX on a substrate by subsequent conversion to cellulose using HCl vapors. The first part of the talk deals with the details on the preparation and surface analytical characterization of such films. In the second part of the talk, these films are exploited in different types of applications. One potential application relates to their interaction with biomolecules whereas adsorption experiments of different proteins (BSA, fibrinogen) have been performed by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy. Besides these biobased application first experiments showed that such films can be used to realize (photo)electric composite thin films using copper indium sulfide as conductive material. Electric characterization of the films is exemplarily shown.
