Biocompatible cellulose nanofibrils are widely used due to their attractive properties such as low density, lightweight, thermal stability, and good mechanical properties. These prerequisites make cellulose nanofibrils a promising precursor for the design of bio composites and bio-inspired sensors. Airbrush spray deposition an industrial-style technology is used to facilitate an easily scalable and transferable technology for industrial applications in various coatings. Combining airbrush spray deposition and cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), we thus aim for industrially applicable, sustainable templates. Thus, understanding the fundamental self-assembly process in the early stages of drying kinetics of thin film fabrication via airbrush spray deposition is of great interest. Hence, we investigated the self-assembly process by airbrush spray deposition of TEMPO oxidized cellulose nanofibril thin films by in situ grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) and UV-Vis spectroscopy followed by ex situ microscopic and spectroscopic measurements We investigated the impact of ambient parameters as substrate temperature which inhibits the aggregation and facilitates the evaporation of carrier solvents. This leads to an immobilization of the CNFs when they land on the surface and to very homogeneous cellulose thin films with an unprecedented roughness in biopolymer-based films below 3 nm by spray deposition.
