Tropone iron tricarbonyl is a versatile synthetic building block that shows promise as a platform for the synthesis of complex polycyclic molecules, which are valuable synthetic targets. Key to these efforts is the development and exploration of the substrate scope for an <i>aza</i>-Michael reaction of tropone iron tricarbonyl as well as Michael additions of protected amino acid derived enolates. The results of these studies will be described as well as efforts towards transforming these Michael adducts into aza-polycyclic molecules.
