We have synthesized and characterized several new Lewis base adducts with bis(cyclopentadienide)manganese(II) (Cp2Mn) of the formula [(etax-Cp)2MnLn] (x=1-5; n=1-3) using mono- and multidentate aza-heterocyclic ligands. Consistent with similar Cp2Mn adduct molecules in the literature, there are observed deviations from idealized hapticity in the new compounds. Rationalizing the extent of the hapticity changes observed via crystallography alone is difficult owing to the paramagnetic and ionic nature of the MnII-Cp interaction. Specifically, across the eight compounds we synthesized, the hapticity change appears erratic and cannot easily be quantified as being eta3 or eta5, for instance. Therefore, the extent of deviation from idealized hapticity has been normalized between 0 (idealized eta5 interaction) and 1 (idealized eta1 interaction); the process by which we quantify the deviation from ideality is described in this presentation along with the characterization of the new Cp2Mn-adducts. We have found a correlation between this non-ideal hapticity parameter and the cone angle of the Lewis base adduct, which may find application in quantifying cone angles for other new ligands.
