A series of water swellable high amylose starch-based adsorbents were synthesized by cross-linking the polysaccharide chains with difunctional isocyanates. The notion that the preparative conditions can template the formation of helical amylose was tested by examining the solid-state structure of the resulting materials using XRD. Further, the impact of cross-linking on amylose helicity was studied. Lastly, the performance of these polysaccharide-based materials as adsorbents for small molecule hydrophobics will be discussed.
