The American Chemical Society (ACS) Student Chapter at Southeast Missouri State is a small student chapter with around 5-10 active student members each year. During Spring 2017, our chapter decided to focus on increasing our community outreach and followed through with a variety of events. Our chapter set a goal of demonstrating that chemistry can be fun and powerful even though it sometimes gets a bad wrap for being very hard. This goal echoes Goal 4: Communicating Chemistry’s Value from the ACS 2017 Strategic Plan. To follow through with this goal, we have visited a 1st grade classroom, manned a demonstration table during our university’s Family Weekend, and co-hosted a career panel on campus. Additional events that are planned for the academic year include a middle school wide chemistry demonstration presentation, manning a demonstration table during a Halloween event on campus, and returning to the 1st grade classroom. Here, we will present information about several of our successful events.
