By immobilizing enzymes onto solid supports it is possible to get a catalytic system that combines the selectivity and activity of enzymes with the reusability and ease of separation of heterogeneous catalysts. Previously we have immobilized enzymes onto glass slides using DNA directed immobilization to achieve a well-ordered array in a site-selective manner. In this work we move to immobilizing enzymes onto mesoporous silica. By expanding from two dimensions to three, we are able to vastly increase the overall catalytic activity of the system. We have also used sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy in order to study the orientation of these systems.
