Layered van der Waals materials such as graphene, hexagonal-boron nitride, and transition metal dichalcogenides have received widespread attention due to the unexpected physical and chemical properties that arise in the two-dimensional (2D) planes. These atomic 2D materials can be chemically doped to tailor their properties; however, it is difficult to achieve sufficient doping of these materials due to the lack of chemical handles on their surfaces. Here, I present the synthesis and properties of a semiconducting layered material composed of rhenium chalcogenide molecular clusters. This cluster-based network exhibits strong in-plane bonding and weak van der Waals interactions between the layers allowing for exfoliation into thinner sheets. The surface of these cluster-based materials bears halide groups that allow for chemical substitutions with a variety of chemical functional groups. Because of its accessible chemical tunability, this rhenium chalcogenide network presents a novel family of 2D materials with attractive properties for optoelectronic and low-dimensional physics applications.<br/>
