Clean and sustainable energy carriers alternative to carbon based fuels for the current power generation are being extensively investigated to mitigate the global energy and environmental issues. To achieve the “hydrogen economy” for the future, a safe and reliable hydrogen storage system that enable to store and release large quantities of hydrogen is particularly needed. We present here on two CO2-mediated hydrogen storage materials, formic acid (HCO2H) and potassium formate (HCO2K), applicable to applications related to fuel cells and energy storage systems, and will introduce numerous Pd based catalysts that play important roles in accelerating C-H and/or O-H bond activation for hydrogen release on demand from these materials. Finally, we also present a hydrogen generation system fueled by formic acid, integrated with a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack, generating a fuel cell power of 180 W over 1 h without noticeable catalytic deactivation.
