The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains one of the main barriers to widespread adoption of fuel cells for energy production. This talk will address two questions related to this challenge:<br/>(1) Is it possible to overcome the high overpotentials commonly associated with molecular ORR catalysts?<br/>(2) Can molecular electron-proton transfer mediators provide the basis for practical new approaches to the ORR in fuel cells?<br/>Recent data has provided affirmative answers to both questions, and insights derived from these studies have important implications for the role of molecular approaches to electrocatalysis.
