Nanostructured sensors with high surface areas are ideal for detecting low concentrations of DNA, proteins, and small molecules due to surface plasmon-mediated effects. Specifically, surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) data supports signal enhancements that are on the order of 108 – 1014 in the presence of silver nanostructures. In this work, nanostructured silver dendrites were fabricated by way of galvanic displacement reactions, and the role of the ClO4- spectator anions was carefully analyzed. Preliminary data suggests a decrease in the SERS effect when AgClO4 is used as the source of Ag+ in the galvanic displacement reactions. The SERS effect decreases further when growth times are increased. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) data suggest evidence of a coating over the silver dendrites, which may cause the decrease in SERS signals.
