The Missouri Western State University (MWSU) American Chemical Society (ACS) Student Affiliate, also known as the Alchemist Club, will showcase our activities and outreach events over the past year via poster presentation. The mission of the MWSU ACS Student Affiliate is to inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and foster interest in chemistry at MWSU and throughout the local community. This past year we have been focusing on the ‘fostering’ part of our mission. This has been undertaken by the MWSU ACS Student Affiliate through an all-inclusive model to exemplify scientific passions and demonstrate dedication to the practice of chemistry through service. This is reflected by our recent increases in membership and regular attendance of our meetings. This service includes contribution of time and person-power to Chemathon, an competitive educational chemistry event geared for regional high school students. This ACS Student Affiliate also works to advocate for an engaged academic environment by acting as a catalyst for promotion of exhibitions and events on campus. This include coordinated social events such as the “Pumpkin Blast”, local game nights and alignment of meetings to follow a monthly pot-luck done by the chemistry department. We have additional service in the form of outreach, where the Alchemist Club has sent members to the Weston High School Science Fair to serve as judges of science projects and/or offer advice and other helpful input to students. Besides service, the Alchemist Club places emphasis on for undergraduates presenting research at local and national levels. Our capstone event fully integrates the the Alchemist Club with the MWSU Chemistry department where we work alongside members of the MWSU Department of Chemistry to host “Super Science Saturday” at Missouri Western; a community event that engages 1500+ members of the greater Saint Joseph area, involving science demonstrations and hands-on activities presented and staffed by the members of the Alchemist Club. Through these actions we strive to inspire and show the greatness that is chemistry to our community.
