A two-step reaction pathway was determined to produce the intermediate, 2-((2,6-dimethylphenyl)amino)benzaldehyde. An Ullmann coupling reaction was utilized in step one to couple a 2-halobenzoic acid and 2,6-dimethylaniline to produce N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)anthranilic acid, which was then reduced and oxidized to produce 2-((2,6-dimethylphenyl)amino)benzaldehyde. Although 2-((2,6-dimethylphenyl)amino)benzaldehyde was synthesized, the desired final product was N-(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-N-(2-formylphenyl) formamide. Therefore, an additional one-step formylation reaction was proposed, but not completed.
