Academia Ponce Interamericana (API) Chem Club was recently formed in our high-school to promote the students’ interest in chemistry throughout STEM activities and to enrich students learning experience. Many students have shown a positive reaction when performing chemistry experiments and asked for more activities of this kind. As a consequence of this interest, we have planned a series of chemistry based activities that will be conducted during this academic year to involve our members in extracurricular activities and develop their leadership skills. The activities include “chem demos”, science related talks, Earth day celebration, Chemistry week celebration and a conference about opportunities in STEM careers. Such activities are aligned with the vision and mission statement of the academy. Also, to develop leadership and compassion in our students, we had coordinate community service to help families affected by the Hurricane Maria. As a result of our initiative, we have two senior students working on nanotechnology research projects in collaboration with the Inter American University Ponce Campus to improve their laboratory skills and promote interest of continue studies in STEM careers. The API Chem Club is compromised with the students and their development. We are building leaders by promoting values, STEM and extracurricular activities.
