Combining late transition metals with metalloids can lead to new cooperative reactivity, making difficult reactions more accessible. We have explored pairing an electron-rich cobalt(I) center with silicon in pincer-type silyl and silylene complexes. A novel base-free cationic cobalt silylene was fully characterized, including by X-ray crystallography, and its reactivity with a variety of small molecules (including those containing protic and hydridic E-H bonds) demonstrated. Ongoing research focuses on the possibility of using this cobalt silylene complex in catalytic processes including C-H functionalization and hydrosilylation.
