Phenylarsonic acid (PAA) is an organoarsenic compound with potential toxicity to humans. The purpose of this research is to develop an analytical method based on criteria of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Such a procedure includes determination of the method’s analytical range and limit of detection, optimization of sampling media, and conducting both a recovery and storage stability study. Previous work in this laboratory used High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for determination of the concentration of PAA in air samples. The mobile phase consisting of 50% water, 48% methanol, and 2% acetic acid was used a detection wavelength of 263 nm. Optimal sampling media were glass fiber filters. The current study aims to confirm previous work, especially related to the recovery and storage stability study and determination of the method's limit of detection. These results potentially will lead to safer work environments in which workers can determine their exposure to arsenic.
