Gold nanoparticles have many medical applications including drug delivery, imaging, and therapy.  One characteristic of metal nanoparticles is surface plasmon resonance (SPR).  The peak SPR for gold nanoparticles lies at a wavelength of 532 nm.  Exposure to electromagnetic radiation from a laser near this resonance position results in a significant change in temperature of the immediate surroundings of the nanoparticles, which can lead to possible cell damage.  The gold nanoparticles used in our research are self-synthesized and consist of a gold core and a ligand shell of gallic acid in combination with various salts. Besides producing very small nanoparticles (smaller than 5 nm) that are able to penetrate the cell membrane, those nanoparticles confer fluorescence and are used for cell imaging purposes.  In our research, we introduce gold nanoparticles into A-375 skin melanoma cell cultures in order to investigate photothermal effects on cell viability. <br/> <br/>
