Sympathetic cooling with laser-cooled atomic ions and neutral atoms promises dramatic advances in the study of cold and ultracold chemistry of state resolved molecular ions. I will discuss recent progress along this research front. We have recently observed and characterized the reaction of a polyatomic molecular ion with laser-cooled Ca atoms. The reaction exhibits an interesting dependence on electron spin and produces a novel (and somewhat surprising) hypervalent molecule. I will also discuss the development of a technique for controlling the collision energy of a reacting pair with millikelvin resoultion. <br/>
