[5+2] Cycloadditions are powerful reactions that allow for the construction of chiral oxygen bridged three dimensional molecules. One important factor in the intramolecular cycloaddition reaction is the placement and constitution of the tether. Preliminary results suggest that the electronics of the alkene bear significant influence on the outcome of the reaction. Previously, maltol derived carbon-tethered pyrones have been synthesized and subjected to [5+2] cycloaddition. In the current work, Kojic acid derived pyrones with both carbon and oxygen tethered olefins are investigated to gain deeper understanding of the proposed mechanism of the [5+2] cycloaddition.
