Many small universities are faced with the challenge of trying to provide a rich educational experience for their students, but have limited instrumentation options. This problem is especially pronounced during the quantum mechanics segment of physical chemistry laboratory class. While it is possible to do an excellent particle-in-a-box experiment with even a basic, inexpensive spectrophotometer with Vis/near-IR capabilities, most other experiments demonstrating quantum mechanical concepts require more advanced instrumentation, usually with a high resolution. While some schools have chosen to use a mathematical modeling software to simulate more sophisticated experiments, I have chosen a different solution. In order to give the students a meaningful and valuable laboratory experience, I have incorporated practice in styles of science writing, fundamental laboratory skills, literature analysis, and oral presentations. These activities are interspersed among other experimental labs to provide practical experience in a wider range of skills than students may otherwise acquire, yet staying authentic to the philosophy of the laboratory experience, and consistent with the course material. I will report on the experience incorporating these modifications into our laboratory curriculum, with reflections and recommendations for future improvements.
