Diruthenium complexes have been shown to effectively catalyze the silylation of carbon hydrogen bonds in benzene and pyridine. However, the catalytic cycle with these diruthenium complexes is still unknown. A stable dimethyl diruthenium complex was synthesized using CH<sub>3</sub>MgBr with a 68% yield and protonated with one equivalent of Brookhart’s acid. Protonation of the dimethyl diruthenium complex resulted in a promising reactive monomethyl diruthenium complex with an open coordination site, which has been tested as a possible intermediate in the catalytic cycle.
