The purpose of this project is the synthesis and characterization of cobalt(II)-pyrazine metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). A high quality single crystal was grown and analyzed using single crystal x-ray diffraction. The MOF has a 2D grid topology with four pyrazines and two aqua ligands bound to each cobalt with two water molecules and two nitrate anions per cobalt in the pores of the framework. Bulk samples of the cobalt(II)-pyrazine MOFs were synthesized and analyzed using powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and elemental analysis (EA). The results showed that the structure and the composition of the bulk samples and the single crystal were the same. The stability of the crystals at different temperatures was evaluated using PXRD, TGA, and EA to monitor structural and compositional changes. Magnetic measurements were performed on grown crystals and analyzed using the Curie-Weiss law. The magnetic measurements showed that the sample was paramagnetic and had significant spin-orbit coupling.
