Lignin is typically a waste stream in most current biorefinery processes and is combusted to produce heat and power. Only about 5% of lignin is used in low-value commercial applications. Therefore, conversion of lignin into high-valued materials has gained wide concern. Herein, a facile approach was firstly reported to transform lignosulfonate into layered nanosheet materials via self-assembly in two-phase solvent system. The surface of layered structure was smooth and the thickness was in the range of 20-50 nm. Moreover, the formation mechanism were also investigated using TEM and AFM. In order to evaluate its potential applications in electrode materials, the supercapacitor electrode was prepared using lignosulfonate nanosheets/graphene composites and their electrochemical properties were investigated. The results indicated that the electrochemical performances were dramatically enhanced with the addition of lignosulfonate nanosheets as compared with electrode materials with the presence of graphene only.<br/> <br/>
