Alkyl halides are easily diversified building blocks for fine chemical synthesis. The incorporation of alkyl halides into the cross-coupling reaction manifold has been incremental as a consequence of low C-metal bond strength for sp3 carbon atoms and propensity for beta elimination from alkylmetal intermediates. The use of photoredox catalysis to selectively modify metal oxidation states of alkylmetal compounds in situ allows us to finely control the reactivity of transient organometallic species, thereby opening up an avenue to novel cross-coupled products. The application of this reaction paradigm to the cross-coupling of heretofore problematic electrophiles and nucleophiles will be disclosed.
