Nanocrystals made of semiconductor, metal and metal oxide cores have attracted a great deal of interest for use in a variety of applications ranging from electronic devices to biotechnology. Processing these materials for tailored applications require that they are rendered dispersible in various media. We have designed a series of metal-coordinating polymers that are ideally adapted for functionalizing QDs as well as Au nanocrystals/nanorods. Furthermore, by choosing the nature of the functional moieties inserted in the polymer it is possible to discreetly tune the solubility of such materials over a wide range of conditions. This allows the preparation of nanocrystals that can be highly compatible, moderately compatible, or completely incompatiblle with polar, nonpolar or hydrophilic media. This surface-functionalization strategy yields nanocrystals that exhibit long-term colloidal stability over a broad of conditions and yet reactive. We have applied the resulting platforms to develop a few applications in sensing, which depend on the system solubility.<br/>
