Zwitterionic polymers are a special type of polyampholytes featuring attractive properties. They contain both cationic and anionic groups to form the overall charge neutrality. They do not have typical polyelectrolyte effects, while their properties are similar with polar non-ionic polymers. Many research has been done on modification of the polyethylene's side groups to get zwitterionic polymers and study on the applications of these materials. Recently, the conjugated zwitterionic polymers have been reported a lot. They have zwitterionic part on the side chains, as well as conjugated backbones. The special properties of conjugated zwitterionic polymers, such as no counter ions and conjugated backbones, give them lots of applications in biological and optical areas. In this paper, we reported the synthesis and photophysical properties of the new conjugated PPE (poly phenylene ethynylene) type zwitterionic polymer. We fully characterized its photophysical properties and responses to different quenchers under series of conditions. In the future, we want to explore the useful applications of these materials in biological areas.
