Homogeneous gold(I) catalysis has been popular due to its unique reactivity as a carbophilic pi-acid but its mode of reactivity has been mainly restricted to redox neutral steps. For the last decade, synthetic chemists have overcome this limitation by virtue of the reactivity of sacrificial oxidants and this approach has resulted in oxidative carbon-carbon coupling reactions. Recent mechanistic studies on elemetary steps of gold(III) complexes have broadened our understanding of their distinct properties and also provided potential for novel carbon-carbon bond forming reactions. Herein, generation and subsequent reductive elimination of reactive gold(III) intermediates will be described.
