The experience for most graduate students in chemistry typically involves input from all five senses. When a blind student approaches learning chemistry, the experience is necessarily different. Challenges for blind students include difficulties in accessing textbook material, teaching methods, assessment methodologies, university and governmental bureaucracies and a variety of unanticipated problems. Despite these challenges, the rewards and successes are plentiful. We will discuss our experiences in taking and teaching several different chemistry graduate courses in the fall of 2017, and illustrate what can be helpful for students going through this experience.
