Biochar is a promising material to improve soil quality, remediate soil pollution and store carbon. To better understand the inner mechanism of biochar applications and benefit the biochar structure design, the characterizations of biochars regarding the C-Si relationship, biochar aromatic cluster structures were investigated. We reported a shifted C-Si protection relationship within biochars, and firstly observed the atomic fine aromatic cluster structures of high pyrolysis temperature derived biochars. For the sorption applications, the removal of biochar and activated carbon towards per-and poly- fluorinated chemicals was investigated. To build the biochar structure-sorption relationship, data were collected from previous published articles and unpublished data on naphthalene and phenanthrene sorption and we found that H/C could be a smart linkage between pyrolysis temperatures, cluster structures, and sorption abilities and the corresponding quantitative relationships were built. To design a strong sorbent, FeCl<sub>3</sub> and ZnCl<sub>2</sub> was applied for co-pyrolyzing with sugarcane, and a graphene-like structure was confirmed which shows the highest reported adsorption capacities towards naphthalene, phenanthrene and 1-naphthol. These studies will guide the structural design and benefit the applications of biochars.
