Faced with 400 students in a large hall it is difficult to claim there is an abundance of learning occurring in a traditional fifty-minute lecture. Recent renovations to one of our lecture halls enable us to implement some group work and active learning activities. While it is not possible to use POGIL activities in this setting, it is possible to develop and implement POGIL-ish activities that combine interactive lecture demonstrations, computer simulations, and short focused activities. This presentation will discuss and show excerpts from our activities on thermochemistry and electrochemistry, as well as provide glimpse of the University of Oregon “chemdemos” web-site which is hosting the interactive activities.
