Two ligands to sensitize the luminescence of lanthanide ions, 4-chloro-N2, N2, N6, N6-tetra(pyridin-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide (L1) and 4-chloro-N2,N2,N6, N6-tetrakis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide (L2) , were synthesized successfully as determined by 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Both ligands formed 1:1 and 1:2 LnIII: ligand complexes in DMF as determined by spectrophotometric titrations, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The photophysical properties of the 1:1 complexes were further investigated using luminescence spectroscopy.
