Two-year college chemistry courses serve a diverse population. The needs of the learners vary from student to student depending on current levels of preparation and long-term goals. The responsibility of making sure that students encounter the appropriate curriculum is often shared by instructors and advisors. Many institutions have shifted to a non-faculty support staff specifically dedicated to the arduous task of advising the complex group of students seeking certificates, degrees, and/or transferability for an extensive list of professions. These individuals do their best to direct students into the correct courses. Instructors are responsible for making sure that the content in these courses meet the needs of the various programs and articulate appropriately. This presentation will share the successes, failures, and current challenges for chemistry at State Fair Community College.
