Around the world, there is an increasing concern with exposure to aluminum within the body. It is speculated that aluminum exposure can have various harmful effects such as Alzheimer’s disease, diminished kidney function, increasing risk for breast cancer and dementia. Normal daily sources of this potentially toxic metal include dyes, cake mix, processed cheese, baking soda, and most commonly, deodorant. The chemistry of aluminum is of great importance due to their presence in alloys, several drugs, plants, environmental waters, and their biological activities in the human body. In this research, the levels of aluminum in sweat will be determined in human subjects based on their use of aluminum-containing vs. aluminum-free deodorant. An inexpensive spectrophotometric method has been developed for the analysis in perspiration using the chromophore Alizarin Yellow R (AYR) 5-[4-nitrophenylazo] salicylic acid at pH 2.0 with an expected detection limit approximately 1.4 ng/mL, 0.001 ppm.
