Adhering to green chemistry best practices offers a transformative way to do chemistry. The Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry provide a convenient checklist for ensuring that these ideals are implemented methodically and completely. Although these principles apply broadly across the undergraduate chemistry curriculum, it is more straightforward to envision direct content developed in organic and synthetic chemistry courses. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Loyola Marymount University signed the Green Chemistry Commitment last year. In this talk, I discuss our progress in introducing and building a deeper understanding of green chemistry across our four year curriculum with particular attention to areas that may not seem as obviously related including energy considerations in physical chemistry and toxicology in upper division capstone courses. Pros and cons of these current efforts are discussed in the hopes of catalyzing efforts at other institutions as well as learning additional ways in which green chemistry can be addressed meaningfully within chemistry and biochemistry majors and perhaps extended to graduate or non-degree programs.
