Organic transformations catalyzed by transition metal elements are typically carried out using precious metals; which are scarce, expensive and often toxic. The importance of these transformations, they provide access to a myriad of compounds used in synthetic chemistry, has not diminished their use despite their disadvantages. Replacement of precious metals, typically from the 2nd- and 3rd-row of the d-block, with their 1st-row congeners is an emerging field of research. Hydroboration of pyridines to afford 1,2- and 1,4-dihydropyridines is a challenging transformation and only a few successful examples have appeared in the literature. In our recent effort to explore base metal catalysis in hydroboration chemistry, we have been exploring applications of commercially available nickel salts in the regioselective hydroboration of pyridines. The results of our catalytic studies will be presented alongside data found in the literature, initial comparison reveals that commercially available Ni salts are viable alternatives for such catalysis. Moreover, regioselectivity could be achieved by careful tuning of reaction parameters.
