The concept of effective mass is introduced with classical examples such as a projectile moving through the air, an object rolling down an inclined plane, and an oscillating spring. It is then shown how the concept of effective mass may be defined for a particle in a box, the Bohr atom, and the simple harmonic oscillator. These concepts are then extended to quantum dots, nanocrystals, and other types of nanostructures.
