Ceramic components of knee and hip replacements are in patients with allergies to the commonly used metals. Recent studies have demonstrated a correlation between in vivo metal transfer (MT) and increased wear on these component parts. Here, we study the interactions between biologically-available metal ions and commercially available ceramics, including SrO, Y2O3, and Cr2O3, in an acidic environment using Raman spectroscopy, Raman Under Nitrogen Spectroscopy (RUNS) and Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). The goals of this project are to examine material properties regarding wear susceptibility and to shed light on how metal ions interact with these ceramic components in hopes of spurring further research into decreasing the wear associated with them.
