Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a unique class of highly porous and crystalline solids composed of metal building units and organic ligands. During the past two decades MOFs have become one of the most intensively and extensively explored material families due to their enormous potential for a wide range of applications. MOFs have demonstrated numerous advantages over conventional/traditional sorbent systems mainly because their systematic and nearly unlimited property tunability. This talk will focus on our most recent progress in developing microporous MOFs for highly efficient capture and separation of selected gases important for several industrial processes. Our studies show that both the capacity and selectivity of MOF adsorbents can be greatly enhanced by engineering their crystal structure, porosity, chemical composition and surface functionality.
